Planning your baby’s nursery can be one of the most fun aspects of pregnancy. Putting the room together somehow makes it all feel that much more real, and allows you to picture yourself and your newborn spending time in that space.
If you’re a natural decorator, it’s also an excuse to redecorate an entire room, which is great! Personally, I had a lot a trouble deciding what we wanted to do with the room, specifically with picking a theme. I have a really hard time looking at a room and trying to decide what I want the end product to look like, so thank goodness for Google and blogs!
We ended up going with a very loose woodland animal theme, which worked for us because we had a few really sweet handmade paintings given to us that we could then easily work into the room.
But no matter what theme you go with, personalized or custom items in your nursery will always add something unique to the room. It can be something that showcases your baby’s name, a favourite bible verse or quote, your little one’s birth details, or a custom wall decal.
I had no idea how many options were out there for personalized nursery décor, and the quality of workmanship on these items are just amazing. I already know some of these will be on my wishlist for our next one!
1. Custom Birch Name Sign
Wild Wood Sign Shop makes beautiful, completely custom wood name signs for nurseries and children’s rooms. They allow you to choose from multiple different stains, fonts, and paint colours to match any room, so it really does fit with any theme! When it comes to wood signs I usually prefer a more natural wood colour (which they also do), but I really like the lighter stain and the branches on this one. You can check it out here on their Etsy page.
2. Decorative Letter Pillow
These gorgeous pillows are crafted by two very talented women from my hometown. They make them using faux leather and crochet edging, and can accommodate a variety of different colour options for both the faux leather and the crocheted edge. They look great as an accent pillow on a chair, in a crib, on a bed, or up on a shelf! They offer pre-made options like the one pictured above, or you can opt for a completely custom, made-to-order pillow if they don’t already have exactly what you’re looking for. You can find this one here on Etsy.
3. Woodland Door Sign
Marie Des Bois makes these super cute name signs that hang on your child’s door. I love this hedgehog one, but she also makes them with other woodland animals, a Canada goose, an elephant, even a unicorn! They’re made from quality pine and hand-painted just for your little one. You can visit her page here to take a look.
4. Nursery Wall Decals
When we were decorating our nursery, we really wanted a custom name decal over the crib but we never found one that we really loved. I wish I had known about Surface Inspired! They have so many options including simple first names, beautiful quotes, and full forest scenes. Plus, all of their decals are made using a matte vinyl so it looks like it was painted right on the wall. If you want to take a look at their designs, you can find them here.
5. Bible Verse Bear Sign
I already know I love anything with bears on it, but I especially love this sign with the bear and bible verse combo. As the creator says in her description, “A great daily reminder for children to be strong and courageous as God is always with them!” The sign is beautifully hand-painted and comes in a stained pine frame. This Rustic Home makes a wide variety of signs for nurseries and other areas of the home, and they take custom requests as well. You can find their Etsy page here.
6. Floral Name Print
This one is a really great option if you already have a frame that you like but need something to fill it with. Printable Life Style will create a custom monogram letter and send you a high quality digital file, which you can then print to any size you need and frame it at home. It’s a lot less costly than other custom name sign options but it still looks amazing as an accent piece. They have a lot of other really pretty designs as well, I highly recommend that you take a look! You can find them here.
7. Wooden Growth Ruler
These growth rulers are perfect for recording your little one’s height as they grow, and they look so good hanging on the wall. You can customize your ruler by choosing the stain and paint colours, as well as by adding names, wording, or pictures. Grow and Company also offers local pickup if you’re in or around Calgary, AB, so if that’s you, you don’t have to pay for shipping! You can read more about them here.
8. Rustic Woodland Fox Sign
One thing this post has taught me is that I apparently love anything with woodland creatures and florals! This sign is no exception. I really like the way that the fox is cut out of the wood with the floral pattern set in behind. It’s made from pine and mounted on plywood, and can be made just like this one or customized to your liking. If you want to take a look at the details for this one or check out her other work, you can find her Etsy page here.
These are some of my favourite custom items, but there are so many more to choose from! I’m sure you’ve noticed by now, but my go-to place to look for handmade items is on Etsy. They have so many handmade products that you wouldn’t even think to look for, and they make supporting local makers so easy by allowing you to narrow your search down to specific cities and towns. If that’s something you’re interested in, it’s a great tool!
